As of January 9, 2017 Mexico is using 9-1-1 for emergencies!
I have heard horror stories about the local hospitals in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo. Once they find out they have an American or Canadian they will try to extort you or your family for thousands of dollars. If you have medical insurance from the United States or Canada, it doesn't work in Mexico. Local hospitals expect you to pay for the bill in FULL before they will release you. So, if you don't have $10,000 up front, you will be calling your aunts and uncles to put the remaining balance on credit cards.
Once you make a call to 9-1-1, any local hospital will come to your assistance. If you desire a particular hospital, you will need to call them directly. My family has experienced several hospital visits for simple things like ear infections, cuts that needed stitches and dehydration from food poisoning.
I have had good experiences and recommend Blue Medical Net Hospital located in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. I make it a point to always carry their business card in my wallet, just in case! If you are just not feeling well, they do offer a car transport service that will pick you up and drive you back to your hotel. This is better than calling an ambulance and having to pay a large fee for the service. Their prices for service seem to be quite reasonable. Yes, you will have to pay them in FULL. Once you have been released I suggest you return in 2 days to pick up your medical records. You can send your medical records to your insurance company to file a claim to be reimbursed. Most insurance companies will reimburse you as if you went to the ER in the United States. Your medical records will most likely be in Spanish. Don't worry because the insurance company will have someone within translate the documents. Make sure to keep all receipts from the visit to file with your claim.
The doctors and nurses at Blue Medical Net Hospital are bilingual. They also offer an in-house pharmacy. I also recommend Costco's Pharmacy if you need to have anything filled.
