If you must need cash, go to an ATM machine at a BANK! Do not use ATM machines that are in stores or on the street. ATM machines at stores or on the street have been known not to give you the cash that you requested. For example, you go to the ATM machines that are located at the front of MEGA. You enter that you would like 3000 pesos. It never gives you your 3000 pesos. Good luck trying to get that particular bank to give you back your money. You will never see that money. You may want to call your local bank and ask what fees they charge if you use an ATM in a foreign country. If your bank has a global alliance with other banks, your fees will be waived. I bank with PNC and my ATM charges are always waived. Bank of America customers can go to Banco Santander in Mexico and use their ATM's free of charge. Most ATM's in Mexico are going to disperse pesos, not American dollars.
While traveling I only bring with me enough dollars for expenses through the airports. I would not recommend carrying a lot of cash on you. I use credit cards whenever possible. I only use my debit cards when getting money from an ATM at a bank. Always contact your credit card company and local bank to advise them of your travel dates and where you will be traveling to. This makes them aware that you will be out of the United States and will not decline your purchases. If you do not call them, most likely you will make one or two purchases and then your credit card will be declined due to fraudulent activity. You will then have to make an international call to contact your credit card company to make them aware that you have made those charges and you are out of the country.
ALWAYS save your receipts! This helps you track what you have spent and what purchases you have made with your credit card. If there is any discrepancy, you always have your receipts to show proof.
