If you are looking to spend the night, there are several hotels along the malecon. These hotels look rather old and "dated". If you drive a few minutes further, there is a new Hyatt Place that opened in July 2014. I would recommend staying at the Hyatt. There is not a swimmable beach but it overlooks a marina with luxurious yachts. Here is a link to the Hyatt Place in La Paz:
Looking for staying in luxury, check out Costa Baja. Costa Baja offers a marina, golf course, resort and spa. Costa Baja is located a few minutes from the malecon. Costa Baja is a gated resort community located on the beach. Check out this link: www.costabaja.com
If you are looking to explore several beaches, drive past the malecon and follow signs towards Costa Baja. Located beside Playa De La Paz Condominiums is a public parking lot on your left with access to a beach. This beach has palapas and seemed private. The water was crystal clear and sandy bottom. It was very clean. Also, check out Parque Acuatico El Coromuel. This is a waterpark that is no longer open. There is public parking, palapas, bathrooms and vendors to get a bite to eat or a tasty treat! I would recommend wearing water shoes at this beach. The beach seemed rocky and there was lots of sea glass.
Directions to La Paz: From Cabo San Lucas or San Jose Del Cabo, travel towards Todos Santos. You will take the by-pass around Todos Santos. When arriving into La Paz, follow signs to "Costa Baja Resort and Spa". If you follow these signs, it will take you right to the Malecon.
